Statistical Analysis of Results of Serologic Test for Syphilis during Recent Six Years (1981-1986) in Chung Ang University Hospital Patients

Abstract
In order to observe recent incidence of patients with syphilis, we have examined in-or out-patients and physical check-up patients of Chung Ang University Hospital from January, 1981 to December, 1986. A total of 33,388 patients was tested by VDRL test, and 787 patients with reactive in VDRL test were tested by TPHA. They were subjected to statistical analysis.
Clinical survey was also carried out in 285 patients with syphilis in the Department of Dermatology, Chung Ang University Hospital for the corresponding period.
The results were summarized as follows
1) Positive rate by VDRL was 4.5%; the false positive prediction (FPP) rate for VDRL was 17. 3%. Therefore approximately 3.7% of the total was estimated to be patients with syphilis.
2) Of the 17,581 patients who had VDRL test in their physical checkup, the positive rate for VDRL was 1.7%, the FPP rate for VDRL was 17.3%. The estimated number of patients with syphilis from the total 17,581 was 104, thus showing a 1.4%.
3) Of the patients in the hospital service department, the patients in Department of Dermatology had the highest VDRL positive rate (24.5%), and the FPP rate in these patients was 13.9%. The estimated patients with sysphilis among the 1901 patients who had VDRL test was 400, thus showing 21.0%.
4) From observing the FPP rate for VDRL of the patients with syphilis visited to the Department of Dermotology who had taken VDRL and TPHA, we found out that the FPP rate increased as titre decreased, thus showing statistically significant difference (p<0.05).
5) Of the 285 patients with syphilis who visited to the Department of Dermatology, 205 patients (71.9%) were male and 80 patients (28.1%) were female. The age of 245 patients (85.9%) ranged from 20 years old to 50 years old.
6) Of the 285 patients with syphilis, 224 (85.6%) patients were diagnosed as latent syphilis. Congential syphilis was found in 5 patients (1.8%).
7) The most common associated STD of syphilis were urethritis (8 cases) and Condyloma accuminatum (6 cases).
8) Patients with Condyloma latum were found in 8 cases (44.7%), alopecia syphilitica in 4 cases (22.2%) and macular syphilid in 4 cases (22.2%).
9) In 16 patients with chancre, location of the lesion was the most frequent in the penile shaft (5 cases) and in 8 patients with Condyloma latum, perianal area (3 cases).
